BEING A MEMBER
UCLA undergraduate students participating in CityLab have the opportunity to be a CityLab volunteer or an enrollee. Members who wish to be enrolled will add MCDB 192B (a 2 unit, letter grade course) to their study list. If you choose to enroll in MCDB 192B, the grade received counts toward your cumulative GPA but does not satisfy any upper division course requirement. Repeat enrollment is allowed for one additional quarter, but two quarters of MCDB 192B are the maximum allowed.
Prerequisite for MCDB 192B
Sophomore standing or higher and completion of (or concurrent enrollment in) LS7A.
Attend all Saturday CityLab sessions (Weeks 4, 6, and 8).
Attend the Tuesday evening meetings (Weeks 4, 6, and 8).
Attend Member Training (Week 3).
Assist in filming modules and session set up.
Lead labs with high school students during session.
Create a pop-culture themed science presentation.*
*Applies to those enrolled in MCDB192B. Optional for others.
Members create animated presentations which draw analogies between aspects of pop culture and scientific topics. In doing so, science topics that may be difficult to grasp are made more accessible and fun.
Modules are short films that are written, filmed, and edited by CityLab members (past and present). They introduce a storyline behind every session's lab experiment, presentations, and activities.
